Surely not everybody. I would recommend Avira.
Or restriction program like AppGuard (which is now very expensive, unfortunately).

I've never tried Avira. I was on Norton Antivirus in the past actually, but I wasn't too pleased.

I was using Avira (free) for many years. It's light on resources,
has very good detection ratio, small # of false positives, and
it's quite reliable in the sense that it doesn't rather observe your
activity / personal data, or spy on you, as some antiviruses are suspected to do.

It's good that it's light. One of the main reasons I dropped Norton like a hot potato and moved to Avast was how resource-intensive it was.

I use no antivirus now. I prefer some restriction programs
like AppGuard and/or SpyShelter (FW). Careful configuration
of Windows firewall and a good browser is important.

Do they do as good of a job as an antivirus program?

They are different - based on some rules protecting from an unexpected / undesirable /
malicious behaviour instead of (mainly already known) signatures. So, they are usually
lighter. However, I haven't seen any really comprehensive comparison tests.
You can check e.g. SpyShelter for free for 2 weeks or so, and some its versions are free.
